The History of ClydeUnion Pumps
Our origins begin with the founding of G&J Weir.
Union Pumps, the other side of the family, is born in Michigan, USA.
Its primary focus is reciprocating pumps, but the company also develops an extensive range of centrifugal pumps.
G&J Weir moves to the landmark site in Glasgow, Scotland, that we still occupy today.
Pompes Guinard, who will go on to develop the hydraulic recovery turbine, are formed.
G&J Weir acquires Drysdale Pumps, adding a specialism in centrifugal pumps for marine applications to its engineering expertise.
David Brown Pumps, which becomes part of our DNA some forty years later, is formed.
G&J Weir acquires Harland, a company specialising in centrifugal pumps, electric motors, dynamos and switchgear aimed at the power and water industries.
Their core Glides products can still be found in operation today: Aquaglide, Isoglide and Monoglide end suction pumps; Duoglide and Uniglide split case pumps; Axiglide propeller pumps and Spiroglide multi-stage centrifugal pumps.
The Weir Pumps business operating from the Cathcart, Glasgow site, continues in operation.
It develops the innovative TWL™ integral steam turbine, water lubricated pump for nuclear applications.
Across the Atlantic, Union Pumps expands into Canada.
Beginning a major period of expansion, Weir Pumps acquires the Mather & Platt business based in Manchester.
This extends their reach into the oil & gas, power and energy markets through a range of water injection pumps and boiler feed pumps, as well as products such as Plurovane and Medivane. Mather & Platt also has an established range of BB2, BB3 & BB5 pumps, plus vertical seawater lift & fire pumps.
WH Allen comes on board, with its vertical turbine shaft driven pumps above 12 inch diameter & steam turbines.
Allen Gwynes join Weir Pumps this year too, contributing its process end-suction pumps, solids handling pumps, self-priming pumps, horizontal and vertical split casing pumps, slurry pumps, submersible pumps, chemical dosing pumps, fire-fighting pumps and gear pumps to the mix.
Girdlestone come on board, bringing further expertise in the petrochemical market with end suction pumps, fuel transfer pumps and condensate extraction Pumps.
Guinard and David Brown Pumps are acquired by Textron.
David Brown, Guinard, and Union Pumps come together under the Union Pump brand name, offering a strong reciprocating pump range.
ClydeUnion purchased pump package business from Weir Pumps
The strands of history converge when ClydeUnion Pumps is formed, bringing together the heritage of Weir Pumps and Union Pumps.
This results in the development of the CUP-BB3 range and HSP products. We also update our OH2, BB2 and BB5 ranges.
S&N Pumps, specialists in vertical seawater lift for auxiliary duties, become part of ClydeUnion Pumps.
ClydeUnion Pumps are acquired by multinational SPX Corporation, from which SPX FLOW was spun out in 2015
Celeros Flow Technology
Following the sale of SPX FLOW’s Power & Energy brands, ClydeUnion Pumps become part of Celeros Flow Technology.
