The Legacy and Evolution of Harland Engineering Company

In 1903, three electrical Engineers: Frederick Carleton Anderson, Charles Atherton Atchley and George Robert Harland Bowden, established a partnership in London, with additional branches in Manchester, Glasgow, and South Wales, under the name G. Harland Bowden and Co. By 1910, the partnership was dissolved, with G. Harland Bowden retaining the London operations, while Anderson and Atchley continued their work together in Manchester and Glasgow under the new name Harland Engineering Company.  

At the end of World War I in 1919, Harland Engineering Company was officially registered as a primary company. By 1937, the company was producing a variety of products, including centrifugal pumps, electric motors, dynamos and switchgear. 

In 1938, Harland Engineering Company. expanded its operations by acquiring all assets of the British Electric Plant Co., which was voluntarily liquidated. That same year, the company went public. During World War II, Harland Engineering continued to manufacture pumps for the mining, marine, and power industries.

By 1961, the company's manufacturing offerings had grown to include electrical machinery, centrifugal pumps, water turbines, and industrial drives. In 1969, Harland Engineering was acquired by G. and J. Weir.  

Today, under Celeros FT, the company continues to honour the rich legacy of Harland Engineering Company while embracing modern advancements.

Pumps Then and Now

Harland Engineering Company had a wide range of centrifugal pumps, many of which Celeros Flow Technology manufacture to this day. 

Their product lineup featured models such as:

  • Axiglide Propeller Pumps
  • Uniglide: the latest generation of the Uniglide single stage, double entry, axially split casing pump continues to be manufactured by Celeros FT today.
  • Swalloglide Type SWG: perfect for pumping both hard and soft solids in water or other liquids, as well as semi-solids, sludges, and sewage. Available in sizes ranging from 2 to 20 inches, these pumps feature vertical or horizontal arrangements, heavy-duty construction to withstand wear from corrosive and abrasive materials, and open, unchokeable impellers.
  • Swallowglide Type SRA: Standard sewage and effluent pumps are available in sizes ranging from 3 to 16 inches and capacities from 100 to 7,500 g.p.m. Features include close-coupled or open shaft arrangements and open or shrouded impellers. The latest generation of the Swallowglide continues to be manufactured by Celeors FT today.
  • Duoglide: the new generation of the Duoglide two stage, axially split, casing pump continues to be manufactured by Celeros FT today.
  • Monoglide Centrifugal Pumps: a single-stage pump, available in three different configurations to meet various head output requirements, can be equipped with either single or dual bearings. It is offered with a driving pulley or an extended shaft for direct motor coupling, and comes in sizes ranging from 1 ½ to 6 inches.
  • Spiroglide Centrifugal Pumps: these pumps are robustly constructed to ensure high efficiency and reliability, making them ideal for a wide range of applications, including waterworks, hydraulic services, mine dewatering, and steel descaling.
