Sizewell C nuclear power station to deploy safety-critical nuclear pump packages from Celeros FT

Celeros FT has been awarded multiple contracts to supply the safety-critical nuclear pump packages for Sizewell C, the UK’s newest nuclear power station. The pumps will be designed and manufactured by our ClydeUnion Pumps brand at their nuclear-accredited facility in Annecy, France.

Sizewell C is being constructed alongside the existing Sizewell B on the East Suffolk coast. It will be capable of generating 3.2-gigawatts of power, sufficient to supply six million homes with low-carbon electricity for at least 60 years, and will avoid nine million tonnes of CO2 for every year of operation. As a generator of low-carbon electricity and heat, Sizewell C can also help to kickstart other net zero technologies such as hydrogen production and direct air capture (DAC).

Nuclear pump solutions

ClydeUnion Pumps is tasked with manufacturing numerous safety-critical pump packages for the Sizewell C nuclear power station. These include:

• The Emergency Feedwater System (ASG), that supplies the required rate of water to the steam generator’s secondary side if all the systems contributing to normal supply of the steam generators are unavailable.

• The Component Cooling Water System (RRI), which is designed to cool and transfer heat load from various components and systems within the nuclear island during different operating conditions of the nuclear plant units.

• The Safety Injection System (LHSI and MHSI), which stops the nuclear reaction and supplies it with a constant source of water during a coolant loss incident.

• The Nuclear Island Vent/Drain System (RPE), which guarantees the confinement of radioactive substances in the event of an accident by transferring contaminated fluids to the reactor building.

• The Safety Chilled Water System (DEL), which supports the general operation of the plant by producing and distributing chilled water for HVAC systems.
